When fourteen year old Sela Mathers discovers an ancient magic book in a condemned library her and her younger brother cast a spell that unlocks the amazing worlds and characters from the books and novels around them. Hercules, Robin Hood and Pecos Bill all come magically to life. But heroes aren't the only characters in stories. Villains too are affected by the magic spell and soon the children find themselves in a race against time to reverse the spell as evil characters from all of literature threaten to take over the world. Their only chance lies with the heroes they've brought to life. But even that may not be enough to stop the Frankenstein, Baba Yaga and the Wicked Witch of the West!

G.I.Joe: Infestation on March was a 2 issues miniseries, now you can find both issues in the first TPB of the Infestation crossover.
It was double amazing, draw the G.I.Joe but in a book with a dark atmosphere, the most "Alien" thing i ever drawn.
If in the space now one can hear you even in the deep of the ocean is the same.

"The Airfighters: Insurrection" preview

Some days ago i have announced my latest Moonstone book: Airboy presents The Airfighters: Insurrection, now it's time to talk about it.

It will be a 40 pages, grey scales, one shot (October 2011, 3.99$) and for the first time all the Airfighters and Airboy will fight together in the same story.
A story played in France, obviously during the second world war, based on real facts about concentration camp prisoners, Vichy soldiers, etc.
I don't want to add more to not ruin the reading of the book.

It's written by Jeff Limke, which is one of the usual Airfighters writer (his character was The Bald Eagle).
After a hard start, due to the difficulty to conciliate real fact, places, geography, etc. with our group of heroes i have found a good rhythm, and at last, i can proudly say that it's came out a good action book.
I thought to slightly modify my style to capture better the WWII action books spirit, being less modern, i really hope to have reach my objective.

I would like to share with you a little preview of it, some pages that i wish increase in you the will to buy it, i'm sure you'll not deserve!

G.I.Joe Infestation issue #1 is out

The first issue of the G.I.Joe: Infestation miniseries is out.

After reading the first reviews and some thoughts on the IDW forum it seems that people have really appreciated it.
I can understand the doubts of the Joes fans about seeing involving their heroes on a zombie crossover, but i was pretty sure that the way Mike Raicht found to tell a horror story in the universe of our soldiers would have worked, and i'm happy to hear that for a lot of people this is even the best Joes book of the last times.

Dead Corpses officially finished!

I can proudly announce that my personal project Dead Corpsest, a graphic novel of 72 pages, wrote, drawn and lettered by me is officially finished.

In January will be published the Captain Action Winter Special, drawn by me an Eduardo Barreto.
My story is another solo tale of Kehm, Action Boy's partner.
This is my second story about her (you can find the first on Captan Action Special #1), wrote again by Joe Gentile.
What made this story more special is the fact that it is coloured by Eleonora Carlini, and Italian artist (she is not just a colorist) which i found with the help of David Messina.

Once finished this story we'll work again on a 30 pages Moonstone Books one-shot, and i hope this will be just the beginning of our collaboration.
I say so because obviously she is very good in her work...

The 2 Infestation books about the G.I.Joe are officialy finished!
They will be both released in March (but the Infestation event will begin in January, here the description of it).

The 2 books come out very well, i'm really satisfied, and is so even the editors and the writer.
The writer is Mike Raicht (Army of Darkness, Marvel Age, The Stuff of Legend, etc.) and we found that we have worked very well together, i'm pretty sure we will do again in the 2011!

It's done with independent filmaker Giacomo Becherini and as written this is just a "teaser", made also to test the possibility to animate parts of my art.

Dead Corpses: "Making of" the cover

I have decided to do a "making of" the cover of my personal project Dead Corpses:

Step 1: the perspective.
Before to draw the sketch itself i was doubtful about the perspective to use in it.
So i have done this 2 tries.
(the one on the right have won)

step 2, the sketch:
After decided which perspective was the better i have done the sketch itself.
The 2 characters rounded by armed people, a simple idea that suit perfectly with the soul of the book.

I have tried to not use shining colours, considering that the book is in grey tones i have not wanted to go too much far from that atmosphere.
I hope you'll like it.

There is no publisher logo, price etc. 'cause my project desn't have them yet.

With Nicolas Wilson, my co-writer, we are finishing to work on the final pages' dialogue and lettering, once done i'll start to search for a publisher.

A little update about my works.

I'm finishing, Issue #2 of Yi Soon Shin, it's coming very well, if you liked Issue #1 you'll love this.

I can say that is a little bit different, the first one was an intro of the characters, the age, the scenario etc.
We have shown Yi's head and muscles, this time it will be more closer and personal, we'll show also his heart.

Wait' i'm not saying that there will be no action, the contrary, you'll see Yi kicking ass as you cannot imagine.

But the book will be more "dark", you'll see...

As always Adriana is making a great job colouring it.

I have also start to work on the second story of The Flying Dutchman that will appear in issue #2 of The Airfighters.

Also this work will be different from the first one, it is not just an adventure of FD but also a true story from Joe Gentile's family.

That's why i think it will be better than the first one.

An image of Moon Knight done after that i read the third TPB of his new series, i love him!!!!

The first idea was to do this image with grey tones, lights, textures etc. like the pages done for Dead Corpses.

Then, for laziness i have just close it with black and white, in a Frank Miller way, nice but not my style...

For first i'm happy to see that Tribute: Michael Jackson has sold out before to be printed.
But don't worry, a second print is coming.

MTV has told about it.

The second news is about my current work, unfortunately i still cannot tell what and for who i'm doing it.
I just can say that is amazing!
It's something totally new, for a new publisher with i never worked for, also the technique is not the same old pencils and inks , just pencils, then another person will take care of my work finishing it.

About Moonstone Books on january will be out the anthology of the Airfighters with my story of The Flying Dutchman inside it, written by Joe Gentile.
Always the same month will be on the shelves The Phantom Generations #11, written by Tony Bedard (Exiles for Marvel, Rebels for DC, etc.)

For Yi Soon Shin i have finished just now some promotional materials, characters sketches for the upcoming Yi's site, banners for advertising etc.

La seconda cosa di cui voglio scrivere è del lavoro che sto facendo in questi giorni, purtroppo non posso ancora dire cos'è o per chi lo sto facendo!
Posso solo dire che è incredibile.
E' qualcosa di totalmente nuovo, per un editor per cui non ho mai lavorato, anche la tecnica è nuova per me, solo le matite, niente china, qualcun'altro si prenderà cura delle mie tavole dopo che le avrò disegnate.

Per quanto riguarda la Moonstone Books a Gennaio verranno pubblicati 2 miei lavori.
Una è la storia di The Flying Dutchman scritta da Joe Gentile all'interno dell'antologico Airfighters.
Il secondo è The Phantom Generations #11, scritto da Tony Bedard (Exiles per la Marvel, Rebels per la DC, ecc.)

Di Yi Soon Shin ho realizzato alcune immagini promozionali e schizzi per il sito in costruzione.

Come annunciato qualche giorno fa attraverso l'intervista coi ragazzi di mangaforever.net la Moonstone Books ha acquistato i diritti degli Airfighters, vecchi characters della defunta Eclipse (e precedentemente acquistati da Todd Mcfarlane).

Tutti questi Airfighters (Skywolf, The Bold Eagle, Iron Ace, Flying Fool, Captain Midnight e Black Angel) verranno rivitalizzati da una scuderia di autori Moonstone tra i quali Mike Bullock, creatore di “Lions, Tigers and Bears”, con cui ho lavorato su The Phantom, Chuck Dixon, Tom De Falco e altri.
Per quanto riguarda il mio sarà "The Flying Dutchman" e son fiero del fatto che Joe (Gentile, editor della Moonstone) abbia scelto proprio me per realizzare i disegni del personaggio sui suoi testi.

Da pochi giorni ho scoperto, dallo stesso, che Oscar Celestini lavorerà su The Skywolf, un ottimo acquisto dalla parte della Moonstone direi!

Sopra trovate una particolare immagine con protagonisti tutti gli Airfighters.
Ogni personaggio è stato realizzato dal proprio disegnatore, The Flying Duchman è quello nel mezzo con la doppia shotgun.
Coordinazione tra atisti, sfondo, dettagli e lavoro di "copia/incolla" è stato tutto realizzato da me.

Domani posterò altri schizzi del personaggio.

The last week i have finished to work on Michael Jackson's Biography for Bluewater Production, and at last it was an easy work to do.
Unfortunately, as is already happen in the past, i had some problems with the colourist (don’t take it personally Ercik, it’s all my fault, is always so with the colourist, Darren knows…) and even if i’m glad of how the pages in B/W look, i’m less happy about them coloured.
But it can happens, it’s not a tragedy…

La scorsa settimana ho terminato la biografia a fumetti di Michael Jackson per la Bluewater, a conti fatti ricerca di materiale a parte è stato un lavoro abbastanza facile.
Purtroppo, come già in passato mi è successo, ho avuto qualche screzio col colorista (Darren, l'editor, ormai è abituato alle mie smattate nei loro confronti, non ci fa neanche più caso...) e sinceramente per quanto sia soddisfatto del lavoro in bianco e nero non lo sono del prodotto finito e colorato.
Diciamo che io andavo verso una direzione e il colorista verso un altra.
Non me ne voglia , non è neanche un novizio, ma per questioni tecniche i nostri stili cozzano totalmente.
Un peccato...

Esco abbastanza frastornato dalle ultime 48 ore, ovvero quelle che hanno sancito l'accordo con Darren per realizzare questo volume su Michael Jackson, l'annuncio della Bluewater stesso, e ovviamente tutte le consueguenze che ha portato, sopratutto buone.
Però devo dire che non avevo mai provato sulla pelle la "velocità d'informazione" che scorre in internet.
Perchè nelle 24 ore dall'annuncio ho ricevuto di tutto, dai complimenti dei colleghi agli insulti, sino alle interviste.

Bluewater Productions is paying tribute in October to his memory and legacy with a special collector’s edition biography comic.

The newest addition to the publisher's critically acclaimed biography library will trace Jackson’s rise as a musical prodigy with the “Jackson 5” through last Thursday’s sad end. The book will feature highlights from his storied career and cover his enigmatic private life.

“Michael Jackson’s music served as the soundtrack to countless lives…including mine,” said Bluewater president Darren G. Davis, “His influence on our culture has been profound.”

“TRIBUTE: Michael Jackson, King of Pop”, features a cover and foreword by The Official Michael Jackson Fan Club’s Giuseppe Mazzola. Mazzola was also Jackson’s personal friend. The issue is being written by Wey-Yuih Loh, (Political Power: Colin Powell” and “Political Power: Joe Biden) and illustrated by Giovanni Timpano (Vincent Price Presents). Noted cover artist Vinnie Tartamella will also provide an alternate cover.

“This is a celebration of his life and what he meant to a legion of fans,” Davis said. “Although the book won’t shy away from some of his personal troubles, we try to tell a balanced story that shows Jackson as a musical genius, an unparalleled superstar and as a complex person.”

Davis noted that he initially waffled at producing a tribute comic, but after receiving dozens of emails and phone calls he knew it was the proper way to show respect and give fans a lasting remembrance.

In recent months, Bluewater has become one of the leading producers of biography comics. Launched earlier this year, Bluewater’s “Female Force” has featured influential women such as Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Princess Diana, Sarah Palin and Oprah Winfrey. A follow-up series, Political Power launching in July is set to turn the spotlight on politicians like Colin Powell, Barack Obama, and Al Gore.

Bluewater’s biography titles have drawn considerable media attention, including features on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and “Live with Regis and Kelly.” It has also been featured in such periodicals as People Magazine, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, USA Today and thousands of blogs and other media outlets.

Piccolo giro di boa a livello artistico e di carriera, dopo gli ultimi 2 anni a disegnare "un po a destra e a sinistra" il domani si prospetta un po più stabile.
Certo i piccoli lavori ci saranno sempre ma il futuro è legato (per ora) "solo" a la miniserie di Yi Soon Shin, "36" il mio progetto personale e la nuova serie Moonstone.

Quindi riprendiamo le fila di ciò che è stato e da qui qualche recensione presa qua e la sulla rete.

Mr. T Graphic Novel:
Di cui ho realizzato solo la storia finale, 22 pagine su un volume di 100 e oltre pagine.
In generale al libro è stato criticato di non aver un "target" ben preciso, disegni (quelli non miei) stile cartoon con colori vivacissimi abbinati a tematiche a volte sin troppo da adulte (violenza sui minori ecc.) problema questo che spesso ho fatto presente allo staff in fase di realizzazione, purtroppo rimanendo inascoltato e che alla fine mi ha portato a chiudere i rapporti con loro in maniera non proprio idilliaca.
Il volume al pubblico però a grandi linee è piaciuto, sopratutto per la passione che oltreoceano hanno per questo personaggio.
Nessuna nota particolare sui miei disegni.

Vincent Price Presents #2 & #4:
La serie in generale sta avendo un discreto successo nel suo piccolo, anche qui magari si naviga troppo tra una storia per adulti ed una un po meno, però la qualità è sempre abbastanza buona per lo standard.
Per quanto riguarda i miei numeri il #2 è andato così così, certo raccontare le gesta di neanderthal licantropi non è facile, in più i testi tiratissimi e poveri di Chad Helder (autore anche del #4) hanno creato non poche perplessità.
Troppe sequenze prive di testo dove anche a me viene colpevolizzato il fatto di non dare maggiore spessore ai personaggi la dove mancano le parole.
Critica giusta, per carità, ma sfido chiunque a dare spessore a dei neanderthal (non famosi per la loro mimica facciale).
Per quanto riguarda il #4 sono contento che tutt'ora viene considerato uno dei migliori numeri di questa serie, effettivamente l'atmosfera è abbastanza ispirata e i disegni si assestano su un buon standard (ma ancora non dei miei migliori).
Qui invece Chad ha dato il meglio di se e si è visto.
Clichè a volontà per un piccolo classico.

Plan 9 From Outer Space Strikes Again:
La mia ultima fatica made in Bluewater è stato il sequel del famoso film di Ed Wood, diciamo che la storia è mostruosamente brutta (voluta o meno) e non è stata molto apprezzata, tanto da chiedersi se non mi hanno puntato una pistola per disegnarla...
Comunque il livello artistico è discreto e ne sono abbastanza soddisfatto, anche se effettivamente disegnarla non è stato proprio "uno spasso".

Captain Action #4
A un passo dalla conclusione (#5) della storyline che riporta in vita questo personaggio bisogna ammettere che numero dopo numero la qualità è un po calata.
Soddisfatto comunque dei miei disegni nonostante la prova sia stata solo su matite direttamente colorate (una novità per me) e per il genere stesso super-eroistico su cui non avevo mai lavorato prima d'ora .

Capitolo Moonstone:

E' uscito da poco il secondo numero di Captain Action disegnato da me, ovvero il #4, sui testi del duo Nicieza/Grant.

Invece è stato ufficializzato il capitolo di The Spider da me realizzato diversi mesi fa, è il numero #2 e uscirà a settembre sui testi di Will Murray, scrittore pulp che spesso ha lavorato su questo personaggio:

Attualmente sto realizzando un'immagine promozionale dei nuovi personaggi targati Moonstone, sarà un lavoro di squadra poichè io realizzerò il mio e il background totale e gli altri artisti il loro personaggio per creare un immagine disegnata "un pò da tutti", qualcosa di diverso insomma.

36 che forse potrebbe cambiare titolo per motivi vari che non sto a spiegare, a tempo debito l'annuncio ufficiale, nel frattempo ho ufficialmente iniziato il secondo numero realizzando le prime 2 pagine, piccola preview...

Per quanto riguarda l'eroe Coreano ci son delle case editrici che inominciano a mostrarsi interessate al prodotto (continuo a dirlo grazie sopratutto ai maginifici colori di Adriana) Per qualche oscuro motivo una mia cover è finita in copertina di una rivista asiatica (con tanto di articolo interno che non sto a mostrarvi per ovvii, coreani motivi) e la cosa incomincia a farsi (piacevolmente) inquietante !

Sul fronte "36" in questo momento mi sto occupando della realizazzione di alcune immagini promozionali, qui sotto potete vedere un piccolo mosaico di queste 6 illustrazioni.

Mentre per quanto riguarda il fumetto ambientato nella seconda guerra mondiale ho appena finito lo studio del protagonista principale (sempre sotto una piccola preview).
La casa editrice sarà la Moonstone Books e lo scrittore/co-creatore sarà Joe Gentile, editor della stessa etichetta.

Questo è il soggetto dei miei ultimi schizzi, cosa abbia a che vedere con i fumetti sarà svelato presto...
Diciamo che sto lavorando alla "rivitalizzazione" di un vecchio personaggio che passava le giornate a tirare giù caccia nazisti durante la seconda guerra mondiale.

Speravo di poter annunciare buone nuove anche per "36" ma purtroppo per motivi contrattuali (sopratutto legati ai diritti) non sono riuscito a trovare un accordo con una buona casa editrice indipendente americana.

Un vero peccato !

Qualche aggiornamento sparso:

Apriamo con l'ultima fatica su Survival, una doppia pagina, la 46/47 piena di zombie, zombie morti (!?!).
Vi ricordo il link QUI.

Ho appena terminato il primo numero di Yi Soon Shin e devo dire che nonostante qualche dubbio iniziale (sopratutto quello dove dovevo disegnare i giapponesi come i villain della storia, io che ho combattuto ad Akira e a Kurosawa insieme ad Homer) il prodotto finale è risultato più che ottimo, dopo gli ultimi mesi di molta tavoletta grafica mi ci voleva un po di sudore e china pure...

Trall'altro oltre a il lavoro stesso è interessante tutto ciò che lo circonda, i diversi contatti che ho avuto con il consolato Koreano in Italia, il loro invito al Bologna Children's Book Fair 2009 dove ho avuto modo di parlare con alcuni editori Koreani di Manhwa e libri per ragazzi e ricevere qualche dritta sul lavoro che sto realizzando.
Tutto molto bello.

Adesso mi ributto su 36 per dare una botta definitiva allo studio del secondo numero per poi esser pronto a disegnarlo quanto presto.
A questo punto la vedo dura che esce prima della fine del 2009, ma va bene così, merita il tempo di cui ha bisogno.

Nel frattempo è stato pubblicato dalla Moonstone Cpt. Action #3 di cui ho realizzato appena 2 pagine.
Novità in vista per quanto riguarda la Moonstone quindi restate sintonizzati.

"36: A Heroic Bloodshed"

è il titolo (provvisorio) del mio progetto personale, una mini di 2 numeri da 32 pagine (o graphic novel anche quello da decidere) scritta e disegnata da me, con la collaborazione ai testi di Nicolas Wilson con cui già ho lavorato su Do.Fir e lavoro su Survival.

Nonostante riesca a lavorarci spesso rientra sempre nel "free time" tra una commissione e l'altra, la data di creazione è intorno a maggio dell'anno scorso e adesso che siamo quasi a marzo sono a metà lavoro ( 1 cover, 32/32 pagine disegnate del primo numero, 23/32 letterate del primo numero, 23/32 schizzi del secondo)

Lentezza dovuta anche al fatto che curo storia, testi, disegni (matite, chine e photoshop) e lettering, ma credo che vista l'importanza che ha per me questo lavoro esso meriti ogni singolo minuto speso in più.

Posto qui una manciata di tavole, a presto per aggiornamenti su editore, data di pubblicazione ecc.

Yi Soon Shin

Questo è il nome del personaggio storico protagonista della miniserie su cui presto inizierò a lavorare.
Si tratta di un Generale koreano del '500, protagonista di molte battaglie navali e non, famoso per non averne mai persa una e aver rispedito i giapponesi (che volevano passare dalla Korea per invadere la Cina) al mittente.
Le parole di Onrie Kompan, lo scrittore creatore della serie:

"This is a 12-issue limited series based on the true story of Admiral Yi Soon Shin, a Korean naval commander who saved his people from Japanese invasion forces during the Imjin War (1592-1598). Ideally, it will be broken up into three separate four issue mini series.

Having never been defeated in battle, Yi Soon Shin won 23 consecutive victories over the Japanese. Each issue will focus on a different battle that helped change the course of the war in Korea’s favor and define Yi’s legacy.

This is a story that sets out to define a real life hero in the realm of comics.

Much like the Nazis during World War II, the Japanese were known for having little remorse for the innocent civilians of Korea. They raped women, enslaved children and killed elders. All that stood before them was one man who could not be defeated in battle.

Dopo aver passato l'ultimo mese unicamente su 36 (terminate 32 pagine su 64 di queste 22 "letterate") ho ripreso a lavorare su commissioni esterne, prima tornando su Survival e poi iniziando un nuovo lavoro per la Moonstone Books, ovvero il numero 4 di Captain Action sui testi del duo Nicieza/Wolfman.

Per la prima parte del titolo poche novità:

Sto unicamente lavorando a "36" in attesa che a gennaio partano quasi in contemporanea la miniserie di stampo storico e la storia di The Phantom.

Dopo mesi di attesa è uscita la mia storia di Mr. T: Ad aprile la Mohawk Media aveva pubblicato la Limited Edition della graphic novel per poi, ora a dicembre farla uscire in versione "normale" e comprendente appunto della mia storia, che ovviamente è superiore al resto del volume di 100 e oltre pagine.

E' stato annunciato, per il mese di marzo, la mia ultima fatica made in Bluewater, ovvero "Plan 9 From Outer Space Strikes Again!".
Sequel ufficale del famoso (e famigerato) film di Ed Wood, da molti considerato come forse "il peggior film mai fatto".
Io e Chad Helder, scrittore di questo one-shot di 28 pagine (con cui ho già realizzato Vincent Price Presents # 2 e # 4) abbiamo provato a realizzare il peggior fumetto di sempre, speriamo d'esserci riusciti.

The Spider, missione impossibile compiuta.
Così sembrava questo lavoro visto che era la mia prima volta con le mezze tinte e photoshop su un progetto che non fosse mio, quindi con una supervisione su qualcosa di cui ancora non ho il completo controllo e la giusta conoscenza.
Il risultato finale è stato soddisfacente per me e per loro, io ovviamente vedo errori ovunque ma anche buoni margini di miglioramento.
Per me l'importante era non cambiare lo stile, la mia visione delle cose, nonostante l'apporto del digitale, cosa che succede spesso ai disegnatori che usufruiscono di questo mezzo.

Per quanto riguarda "36" sono a pagina 17 e il risultato continua a soddisfarmi pienamente sia a livello artistico che di storia.

Guardando avanti all'inizio di Dicembre dovrebbe partire il lavoro storico, mentre a giorni dovrei ricevere la sceneggiatura per "The Phantom" scritta da Tony Bedard.

La Bluewater ha rilasciato una manciata di pagine come preview del secondo numero della serie basata sul famoso attore americano, le potete trovare QUI.
Questo numero della serie si può considerare un vero "presents" perchè di Price non vi è traccia come protagonista bensì giusto come "presentatore" della storia.

Per quanto riguarda gli altri lavori sono in fase "mezze tinte" col photshop sulla storia di The Spider, mentre di "36" sto lavorando sulla pagina n. 14.
